Why the total went up at checkout (tax)
Prices on the site are shown before tax. Once you enter a billing address in a country that charges VAT or GST on software, the checkout adds it at your local rate.
Every price on audio-spices.com and in the cart drawer is shown before tax. The checkout is run by Moonbase, the merchant of record for our store, and it is Moonbase that must collect tax where the law requires it. That is why the total can change the moment you enter your billing address: the tax for your country is added on top.
Who pays tax
- EU countries: VAT at your country's rate, for example 19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands, 20% in France.
- United Kingdom: 20% VAT.
- Norway: 25% VAT (Moonbase is a Norwegian company, so this applies even with a business VAT ID).
- Other countries where digital goods are taxed: the local rate.
- United States: no tax is added today.
Example: a spice listed at €35 comes to €41 in Germany; the same spice listed at £31 comes to £37 in the UK. The receipt Moonbase emails you shows the tax as its own line, so you can claim it back if your business is entitled to.
Buying for a business
On the checkout page switch from Personal purchase to Business purchase and enter your company name and VAT ID. In most EU countries a valid VAT ID removes the VAT from the total (reverse charge). Norway is the exception described above.
Refunds
If an order is refunded, the tax is refunded with it. Nothing about tax is decided by us: the rate and the rules come from your billing country, and Moonbase applies them the same way for every store it runs.
